Learn to Sail in San Diego

Harbor Sailboats is an ASA-accredited sailing school. Complete our course sequence and you'll be qualified to bareboat charter anywhere in the world.

ASA 101

Basic Keelboat Sailing

The entry point. Learn to sail a keelboat up to 20 ft in light to moderate winds. Covers points of sail, tacking, jibing, and basic safety.

Basic Coastal Cruising

Sail a sloop 30+ ft in coastal waters by day. Introduces overnight passages, diesel engines, anchoring, and crew coordination.

Rental Qualifications

What You Need to Charter With Us

We maintain a high safety standard on San Diego Bay. Here's what qualifies you to take one of our boats out independently:

ASA 101 + 103 Certification (minimum)

Basic Keelboat and Basic Coastal Cruising are required for day-sail rentals. Larger boats require ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering.

Demonstrated Sea Time

Show us your logbook or take a brief checkout sail with one of our instructors. We assess boat-handling, docking, and safety procedures.

Equivalent Experience Accepted

No ASA card? USCG, RYA, or other recognized credentials may qualify. Call us — we evaluate on a case-by-case basis.

Membership or Day Charter Booking

Join as a SailTime member for guaranteed access, or book a one-off day charter. Insurance coverage is included in both arrangements.
